What is Usui Reiki

Usui Reiki is energy healing method originating from Japan, found by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. Master Usui was a Japanese scholar and spiritual seeker. In 1922, after a 21-day fasting meditation on Mount Kurama in Kyoto, he experienced the realization “The Universe is Me, and I am the Universe” and attained the energy and healing ability of Reiki. He subsequently founded the “Usui Reiki Healing Society.”

Reiki therapy works by channeling Reiki (“Universal Life Energy”) through the hands to help balancing the energy in the body, emotions, and mind, promoting natural healing. Reiki is not associated with any religion or belief system, nor is it a medication or invasive treatment. It is purely natural energy that anyone can learn and use.

The Meaning of Reiki

The term “Reiki” is made up of two Japanese characters:
・“Rei” (霊): Represents “the Universe,” symbolizing omnipresent wisdom and spiritual energy.
・“Ki” (氣): Refers to “life energy,” similar to the concept of “Qi” in Chinese or “Prana” in Indian traditions, which is the fundamental force that sustains life.

Thus, Reiki means “Universal Life Energy,” which flows through all living things. Through specific training and initiation / Attunement (Reiju), this energy can be directed for healing and transformation.

Modern Applications of Reiki

・Medical Support: Used to treat illnesses, alleviate pain, reduce side effects of chemotherapy, accelerate post-surgery recovery, and boost personal immunity.
・Emotional Healing: Releases stress, alleviates anxiety, heals trauma memories, and tackles various emotional challenges.
・Spiritual Growth: Enhances intuition and deepens connection with the inner self.
・Healing for Animals and Plants: It is also applicable to animals and plants.

How Reiki Works

CReiki can be used for self-healing or healing others. Practitioners channel energy through their hands, eyes, or third-eye chakra to restore the recipient’s energy balance. During a healing session:
・Universal/Natural Energy enters the practitioner through the top of their head, filling their entire body.
・The energy then flows through the practitioner’s arms and is released through their hands into the recipient’s body.
・The practitioner does not transmit their own energy but acts as a “pure energy medium,” channeling Universal/Natural Energy to the recipient who needs it, without relying on personal intention.

The Five Reiki Principles for Happiness and Spiritual Healing

・Just for today I will let go of anger.
・Just for today I will let go of worry.
・Just for today I will give thanks for my many blessings.
・Just for today I will do my work honestly.
・Just for today I will be kind to my neighbour and every living thing.

Reiki is more than just another healing technique, much more. The practice of Reiki can unfold into a spiritual path of great depth and beauty. Being a channel for the energy essence of Divine Love is not a state that one would enter for the length of a treatment and then go back to “normal”. Being a channel for Reiki affects every moment of our lives, every perception, every choice and every action. As the practice of Reiki unfolds into a spiritual path, we flow Reiki not just from our hands but also from our hearts, our actions, thoughts and feelings. The Reiki Principles provide a valuable guidance for attuning everyday life to the Universal Life Force Energy.
